Fieldpiece Electrical Clamp Meters – Perfect for any HVACR Job

It is critical to have the right tools when maintaining and servicing HVACR equipment. This is especially true for testing and troubleshooting electronic controls. Having the correct electrical clamp meter for the job allows you to safely and accurately measure parameters like amperage, capacitance, and voltage.

What Is an Electrical Clamp Meter?
An electrical clamp meter is an instrument used to measure electrical signals such as voltage, amperage, capacitance, resistance, and more. The clamp jaw is designed to wrap around a wire to measure the amperage and frequency. The HVACR technician is able to get the readings necessary to troubleshoot problems so that repairs can be made quickly.

How to Choose the Right Clamp Meter for Your Application
Here are a few important features to consider when choosing the right electrical clamp meter.

Safety
You’ll need to have a meter with safety ratings at minimum of CATIII 600V or for even higher safety protection, use a meter with CATIII 1000V / CATIV 600V. It’s also a good idea to use a meter with magnets for hands-free testing, and/or a meter with non-contact voltage (NCV) to double check if circuits are hot without requiring test leads.

Variable Frequency Drives
HVACR systems frequently come equipped with variable frequency drives (VFD) to provide increased efficiency. A VFD takes the supplied AC power and converts it to a PWM (Pulse Width Modulated) non-sinusoidal voltage to accurately control the speed of an AC motor. In order to get an accurate voltage measurement, you will need a meter with low pass filtering.

Mini-splits
If you are working on mini-splits equipped with variable frequency drives, they can operate with high voltage signals. You will want use an electrical clamp meter that can measure up to 1000VDC and 750VAC. Also, for mini-splits, it’s important to use a meter that can measure resistance into the megohm (MΩ) ranges as higher resistance values are commonly found in more advanced equipment.
