Fieldpiece Instruments and SkillsUSA Join Forces to Deliver Scholarships Supporting the HVACR Industry

Dec. 1, 2021Fieldpiece Instruments, a leader in tool and test instruments for HVACR professionals for over 30 years, today announced it has joined forces with SkillsUSA to present $25,000 in scholarship opportunities as a way to give back to the industry it serves. SkillsUSA, a consortium of students, teachers and trade industries working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce, has long had an aim to close the skills gap in the U.S. labor market by sponsoring heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) scholarships for trade and technical students. Thanks to the new grant from Fieldpiece Instruments, ten SkillsUSA students studying HVACR in their junior or senior year of high school, or as college or postsecondary students, will receive a $2,500 #MasteroftheTrade scholarship to continue their education in a college or postsecondary HVACR technology program.

“Fieldpiece’s dedication to this field extends well beyond just equipping field professionals with the highest quality and most innovative tools so they can do their jobs faster, easier and better,” said Rachel Newport, director of marketing at Fieldpiece Instruments. “Fieldpiece is also committed to supporting the next generation of up-and-coming HVACR professionals in this fantastic trade. We’ve recently launched free online training resources via Fieldpiece University, an online platform designed to keep industry professionals at the top of their game; and today, we are delighted to announce the Fieldpiece and SkillsUSA #MasteroftheTrade scholarship to further give back to the industry.”

Through the partnership, Fieldpiece Instruments is addressing a shortage of trained labor in the HVACR industry. According to an article published by HVACR Business in September, “80,000 HVACR technician jobs are currently unfilled — representing 39 percent of the total industry workforce. At the same time, the industry is losing an estimated 20,000 technician jobs per year due to the retirement of an aging workforce or basic career attrition rates.”

“We sincerely thank Fieldpiece Instruments for supporting America’s future skilled workforce,” said Chelle Travis, executive director at SkillsUSA. “There is a critical need for more HVACR technicians. We are rolling up our sleeves every day to provide career and technical education, and to forge meaningful partnerships between education and industry that result in a better-trained HVACR workforce and a shrinking skills gap. Working together with Fieldpiece Instruments, we can make this happen.”

To apply for the #MasteroftheTrade Scholarship, applicants must be SkillsUSA members enrolled in its HVACR or general construction programs who plan to study HVACR at the college or postsecondary level in the 2022-23 (high school seniors) or 2023-24 school year (high school juniors). The scholarship application must include a résumé and either an essay (300 words or fewer) or a video (1-3 minutes) answering the question: “Why have you chosen a career in HVACR?” The scholarship opens Dec. 1 and applications must be submitted by March 1, 2022. Scholarship recipients will be announced on May 16, 2022.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the merit of the application including the essay or video and the proficiency of the SkillsUSA Framework skills demonstrated in the application materials. To receive the funds, scholarship recipients must provide an acceptance letter from their postsecondary education program or their first semester tuition invoice. The funds will be distributed directly to the school.

HVACR Product Innovation to be Thankful For.

We’ve been busy at Fieldpiece this year. We started our company with the idea that every HVACR professional in the field needs the best HVACR tools possible. So, we have spent the last 30 years perfecting our tools by taking the pulse of techs, studying where we could improve and creating new, innovative solutions.

Next year, we plan to continue developing new product innovations for HVACR technicians in the field to make their lives even easier. First, we’d like to go over a few of our latest products to hit the market.

Our two newest leak detectors truly raise the bar when it comes to sensitivity, reliability and durability. The Infrared Refrigerant Leak Detector, DR82 and the Heated Diode Refrigerant Leak Detector, DR58 are portable, powerful leak detectors that run for 10-18 hours per charge. They also have a bright blue backlit LCD screen that is easy to read and understand even in the darkest crawlspace. If you’re looking for a leak, you need one of these!

We also introduced a new generation of vacuum pumps! Our all-new Fieldpiece VPX7, VP87 and VP67 replaced the former models, offering even more reliability and speed. Built to cut back evacuation time, the latest pumps handle the demands of any jobsite, allowing you to get more work done and quickly. While all three models feature four in-line ports and our patented RunQuick® Oil Change System, each does offer something unique. From CFM flow rate options (10 CFM/8 CFM/6 CFM) to weight preferences (24 lbs. or 27 lbs.) – techs have the ability to pick the perfect pump suited for their needs. To enable an easier oil change, each pump comes with an extra oil bottle storage that makes it convenient to access Fieldpiece oils!

If you’re pulling a vacuum, you’re going to want a top-of-the-line vacuum gauge. The Wireless Vacuum Gauge, MG44 is the best. Along with being rugged enough to handle the field, it’s packed with all the features you need and it’s wireless. That means it works seamlessly with the Job Link® System App and our Fieldpiece SMAN® Refrigerant Manifold. You can also monitor evacuation measurements directly on the display. Without wires or bulky hoses, you’re free to connect your gauge directly at the system port.

We’re proud of our newest products and they’ve all earned the right to bear the Fieldpiece name. We’re also thankful for the techs out in the field who trust our HVACR product innovations and continue to use them each and every day.

Why We’re Grateful for HVACR Technicians | A Special Thanks

It’s November, the month in which we all give thanks. In our industry, that means being thankful for HVACR technicians that work tirelessly to make A/C systems, furnaces, and refrigeration systems run smoothly. You keep businesses running, restaurants humming, and homes everywhere comfortable for customers.

As an HVACR technician, you work hard every day – running diagnostics and servicing or repairing systems. You do a critical job, and in many ways are unsung heroes. Yours is a unique combination of technical understanding and skill, hands-on problem-solving, and customer service.

As an HVACR technician, you may work in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration; but you are not defined by that. You are defined by who you are at the core – hard-working, versatile, accurate, confident, and reliable.

You withstand the physical rigors of the trade like creeping through crawlspaces and climbing up and down ladders, and you understand the intricate nuances involved in important jobs like re-routing restrictive ductwork, troubleshooting failing compressors, pulling a deep vacuum, and patiently searching for every tiny, refrigerant leak.

Let’s not forget about those late-night repair calls in the dead of winter you respond to without question; and thanks to techs like you, the fridge and freezer keep running through the heat of summer. Your dedication to long hours spent studying and practicing with the latest tools to ensure your skills stay current is unwavering. You always remain ahead of the innovation curve in an industry that changes every day. That’s how you stay true to the expert you are.

Thank you for not letting the broken blower fan win. Thank you for checking and then double-checking the CO levels from the furnace to ensure everyone’s safety. And thank you for keeping our houses warm in the winter, cool in the summer, and just plain cozy all year round.

The work sure isn’t easy, and the conditions are never great, but the result of your efforts are workspaces that function efficiently, restaurants that stay comfortable no matter how full they get, and homes where families gather to celebrate any time of year.

We continue to be impressed by your boundless capabilities, your consistent reliability, and your amazing versatility. You have one-of-a-kind skills, dedication, and a passion for helping others.

This holiday season, we should be reminded that our warm family gatherings are all made possible thanks to a hardworking, relentless, and talented HVACR technician.

Happy Thanksgiving!
