Description and Application

The new SCM3 Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector is a standalone instrument that measures CO in parts per million (ppm). Its electrochemical sensor is fast enough for walk-around tests.

The SOX2 is an affordable alternative to full-function combustion analyzers. It's designed for techs who want to do everyday combustion testing and tuning, without paying for all of the costly extras found on combsution analyzers - extras they don't need or care about.

The SOX2 allows you to easily calibrate combustion equipment such as boilers or furnaces to the manufacturer’s specified Excess Air %, CO2%, or O2%. Tuning the Excess Air, CO2, O2 stack temperature and temperature rise to match the appliance manufacturer’s specifications will increase efficiency and help maximize performance and life expectancy of the equipment. Tuning typically involves adjusting the air/fuel ratio.

Description and Application

The SRH2 is a complete digital psychrometer and a very valuable HVAC diagnostic tool. As a psychrometer, it measures wet bulb (WB), dry bulb (DB), percent relative humidity (RH%), and dew point (DP). As a diagnostic tool, it helps the HVAC technician easily diagnose problems with air flow across the evaporator. It can also calculate the target superheat of a fixed restrictor air conditioning system.

Use the NORM mode (normal psychrometer) to display wet bulb (WB), dry bulb (DB), percent relative humidity (RH%), or dew point (DP).

Use TSH (Target Superheat) to help set the proper refrigerant charge for a fixed restrictor system.

Description and Application

Most non-electrical HVAC/R problems are charge related. Many systems in operation are undercharged or overcharged. This can cause decreased efficiency and compressor failure. The higher the efficiency of a system, the more critical it is that it is charged properly.

Description and Application

The SMG5 provides a 1000V voltage source, monitors current, and displays the resistance between the test points. Maximum current output is <1mA. It can be used to determine the condition of insulation from winding to ground in a motor, compressor, or transformer.

Disconnect the windings and measure the resistance between the windings and ground through the insulation. Determine what a "good" reading is by comparing your reading to values supplied by the manufacturer of the equipment or from your own experience.

Noticing decreasing insulation resistance levels can forecast problems before catastrophic failure.
Why a DMM often isn't enough

To test resistance, a DMM supplies low voltage (<1V) to the test points and is capable of delivering only a few milliamps. It's not a high enough voltage to detect high resistance problems that might indicate moisture and other contaminants and it's not enough current to measure lower values of resistance.
