What is It?
Classic Style Digital Multimeter with Phase Rotation - LT16A - The HVAC/R Detective’s True RMS Meter - LT16A The LT16A is a classic style multimeter with True RMS meter and phase rotation. This manual ranger covers the electrical parameters you need for HVAC/R and, with detachable test leads, works with our accessory heads to test non-electrical parameters too. The LT16A meter measures current, resistance, voltage, capacitance, frequency, continuity and more. Test leads store in the meter body along with the tilt stand and magnetic hanger. The body is constructed of durable ABS plastic and a blue backlight makes the large LCD even more visible. We like to call this the HVAC/R detective’s meter. It’s the meter for technicians that like to search down, figure out and solve electrical mysteries on a system.
How Does it Work?
The LT16A is a True RMS manual ranging DMM that comes with an amp clamp and includes phase rotation for testing three-phase motors. Use the MIN/MAX function to record highs and lows. The continuity beeper tells you if a circuit is open or closed. Operation of the LT16A is easy. Simply select a range and test to hunt down those electrical culprits.
Selecting Ranges For DC voltage, set the meter to the VDC parameter instead of VAC as shown below. For all ranges and functions choose a range just above the value you expect. If display reads "OL" (overload), select a higher range. If display shows less than three numbers, select a lower range for better resolution.

Features and Benefits
Designed specifically for HVAC/R field service, the LT16A offers specific features and benefits to HVAC/R field service pros including:
Works with Fieldpiece Accessory Heads There is a Fieldpiece accessory head available for just about any job. There are heads to measure temperature, superheat, subcooling, RH%, wet bulb, dew point, vacuum (microns of mercury), manometer (inches of water column), amps AC&DC, high voltage, CO, %CO2, air velocity, and many more.
Continuity Indicator If you were doing lab testing, these features would probably drive you crazy. We’ve heard from more than one HVAC/R veteran that these features really remind you of what you’re doing and they’ve avoided potentially dangerous situations in the field. The Hi-V LED and beeper let you know when you’ve hooked up to a circuit over 30V. The continuity LED and beeper tells you if a circuit is open or closed. 400AAC Using the detachable test leads and the accessory head amp clamp, read 0-400 amps directly on your meter.
Capacitance (MFD) Measure microfarads on motor-run and motor-start capacitors using this range. Disconnect the capacitor from power first. Short the terminals to discharge the capacitor. Disconnect any resistors that might be between the terminals of the capacitor and measure to check for degradation.
Microamps DC – Flame Rectification Tests The most common ‘no heat” call has to do with a malfunctioning flame sensing diode. Simply turn the meter to microamps DC, hook up, and see if the flame sensing rod is functioning properly.
Phase Rotation Measure the poles of 3-phase motors to make sure it’s spinning in the right direction..
Frequency Measure from 10Hz to 40kHz using this range with 1 Hz resolution.
True RMS Digital multimeters use two different types of AC sensing. The most common is average sensing, normalized to a true RMS value of a sine wave. The other is true RMS sensing. The actual true RMS value is sensed for a wave form within the limits of the crest factor. Either sensing method will give the same results on a clean sine wave but they may differ on a non-sinusoidal waveform.
Silicone Leads with Detachable Probe Tips Because the wire insulation is silicone, the leads stay flexible in cold weather and will not melt if bumped by a soldering iron. When testing electrical circuits with two hands, there is a risk that a careless mistake may complete a circuit through your body and potentially cause death or injury. Use the either probe clip on rubber boot to connect and firmly hold the V lead in place, detach the COM probe tip, connect an alligator lead tip to COM and ground, and perform a one-hand test more easily than most meters on the market. Built-in lead storage makes it easy to keep everything together from job to job.
Tilt Stand and Magnetic Hanger One thing we hear from technicians every day is how much they enjoy the magnetic hanger because it keeps the meter out of the way while testing. The LT17A includes the magnet and a tilt stand to give you a choice in the way you want to use it.
Bright Blue Backlight Easily read the display in overcast conditions or in dimly lit areas.
MAX/MIN hold Record the minimum or maximum reading during a measurement. To exit the MIN/MAX function, hold the button for more than 2 seconds
And More:
- Volts AC.
- Volts DC.
- Resistance (Ohms).
- Diode Test
- Rugged ABS case with rubber boot.
- Fits naturally in your hand despite classic design.
- Auto power-off (APO) to conserve battery life.
Competitive Advantages
The electrical parameters on this meter are among the most comprehensive in the industry. Add the capability of testing all the other parameters you need for HVAC/R field service through accessory head instruments, and this meter goes from contender to a hands-down favorite. Literally. Use the included deluxe silicone lead set to hook up the V and COM leads, hang or tilt the meter out of the way, and use the included third yellow lead to perform a “no-hands” test on a three-phase motor. ALlthough there are a lot of great electrical meters out there, not many can match the LT16A in it’s versatility for HVAC/R electrical testing.

600 AAC / ADC Current Clamp Accessory – ACDC6
The ACDC6 is a high-current AC / DC Current Clamp Accessory that gives technicians more flexibility when testing line current. Measures up to 600A AC or DC. The clamp enables most multimeters to measure current without breaking the circuit. The jaw opens to 1.18 inches (3 cm). A coiled cable keeps clutter out of the testing area, Quickly zero out the clamp using the adjustable dial on the face. Use with any multimeter with industry standard Volt and COM jacks and mV AC and DC ranges. Green mechanical contractors tell us they are also using the clamp to measure high-current lines on integrated solar panel powered HVAC / hot water systems.
