What is It?

Dual-Display Mini Clamp Meter with Temperature - Read Amps and Volts at the Same Time -  model SC53
Read amps and volts at the same time with the Dual-Display Mini Clamp Meter with Temperature, model SC53.  In addition to having a dedicated display for reading amps, you can measure any of the other ranges on the meter dial simultaneously.  The SC53 is compact measuring only about 8-inches, easy to use and includes many of the ranges you use everyday during HVAC/R field service.  Many instructors recommend the SC53 as a starter meter while seasoned veterans call it a little HVAC workhorse. Temperature and capacitance, built-in safety features like non-contact voltage and amp or dial hold, make this meter a solid choice for the work you do in the field.

How Does it Work?

The SC53 is an auto ranging DMM that with a dedicated amp clamp and display, as well as a display for the rest of the ranges on the meter. When you select a range and hook up to the circuit, the SC53’s bottom display automatically includes symbols or proper decimal places for the range you are testing.  If you are out of the given range on this meter you will receive and “OL” message.  The push button non-contact voltage feature allows you to determine whether a line is hot or not right on the meter.

Selecting Ranges
The following is a look at all of the functions found the SC53 Dual Display DMM for HVAC/R. For DC voltage, set the meter to the VDC parameter instead of VAC (shown below).

Voltage

Disconnect test leads and slide TEMP switch to the right plugging in thermocouple. Insure the temperature being measured is stable. Maintain good contact between the thermocouple and what's being measured.

Features and Benefits

The SC53 is a unique meter.  Not in that it has a dual-display, but in the fact that it has a dual-display and it was made for HVAC/R field service. It includes features and benefits for HVAC/R that really stand out:.

Dual-DIsplay
The SC53 display allows you to read amperage while testing any other function on the dial. More tests at one time means the job gets done right and the job gets done faster,

Non-contact Voltage
With the NCV tab on the tip of the clamp close to an AC voltage, press and hold the NCV button. The NCV LED will light with an analog feel and the beeper will beep. The closer you get to AC voltage, the louder the beep. The NCV function is sensitive enough to detect 24VAC on thermostats (24V to 600V, 50Hz to 60Hz).

400AAC
Using the built-in amp clamp, read 0-400 amps directly on your meter with 0.1 resolution.

Capacitance (MFD)
Measure microfarads on motor-run and motor-start capacitors using this range.  Disconnect the capacitor from power first. Short the terminals to discharge the capacitor. Disconnect any resistors that might be between the terminals of the capacitor and measure to check for degradation.

Temperature
Take ambient air or refrigeration line temperatures and more with the built-in K-type port and the included ATB1 wrap tab thermocouple. Add a wet sock (saturated tissue or a shoelace to take wet bulb temperatures. The built-in temperature junction offers great temperature compensation for more accurate and faster measurements,

Wire Grabbing Jaw
The amp clamp is shaped like a jaw to make grabbing a single wire easy using only one hand.

Hold
The HOLD button is easily pressed with your thumb while holding the mini clamp meter naturally in your hand. It holds any reading on your SC53 so you can concentrate on the test points and look at the LCD after you’ve disconnected.

And More:
  • Volts AC.
  • Volts DC.
  • Resistance (Ohms).
  • Continuity.
  • Rugged ABS case.
  • Ergonomic shape fits naturally in your hand.
  • Auto power-off (APO) to conserve battery life.
  • Compact - under 8” tall.

Competitive Advantages

The SC53 has features and benefits that rival many full-size clamp-on multimeters it also has new safety features to help protect you during field service.. The built-in non-contact voltage sensor (NCV) sensor tells you if a line is hot or not before you work on it.  The continuity beeper tells you if a circuit is open or closed. The hold button on the side of the SC.53 allows you to concentrate on the test point, hold the reading and then look at the display after you’ve disconnected. And the temperature switch won’t let you test potentially dangerous voltages until you’ve unplugged the thermocouple, moved the switch, and plugged in your test leads.  Safer, a dual-display for faster testing, all in a compact meter – it all makes the SC53 a top choice of field service rookies and veterans alike.
