What is It?

The ACDC6 is an AC / DC Current Clamp Accessory that gives technicians more flexibility when testing line current. The clamp enables most multimeters to measure current up to 600A without breaking the circuit.  The jaw opens to 1.18 inches (3 cm).  A coiled cable keeps clutter out of the testing area, Quickly zero out the clamp using the adjustable dial on the face. Use with any multimeter with industry standard Volt and COM jacks and mV AC and DC ranges.  Green mechanical contractors tell us they are also using the clamp to measure high-current lines on integrated solar panel / HVAC / Water systems.

How Does it Work?

The ACDC6 enables most multimeters to measure AC or DC current up to 600A without breaking the circuit.  It converts current measured in amperes into mV AC or DC on multimeters with industry standard jacks and appropriate mV AC and DC ranges.  The conversion displayed on the multimeter is your Amp reading.

Setup and Use
  1. Insert black lead into the COM jack and red lead into V-Ω jack.
  2. Select mV range to read current directly. For meters without mV range, select a voltage range and multiply displayed result by 1000.ACDC6_howitworks
  3. Turn zero adjust knob until multimeter reads zero. In DC if clamp doesn't zero properly, open and close jaws several times first.
  4. Clamp meter around single conductor and take reading. If meter overloads ("OL" or "1---"), select a higher range. For improved accuracy on low currents, loop conductor through jaws several times in same direction and divide reading by the number of loops.
  5. In strong stray magnetic fields, zero the clamp near the conductor being measured.

Features and Benefits

The ACDC6 AC / DC Current Clamp Accessory offers several features and benefits to field technicians:
  • Works with any Fieldpiece expandable instrument or handle or any DMM with mVDC ranges.
  • Angled jaw opens to 1.8 inches and makes singling out a wire fast and easy.
  • Coiled cable makes remote testing easy and clutter free.
  • Zero adjust dial for quick, accurate measurements.
  • Low battery LED indicator.

Competitive Advantages

Originally designed for electrical applications, the ACDC6 AC / DC Current Clamp Accessory is, to our knowledge, the only current clamp in HVAC that can measure both alternating and direct current without breaking the circuit.  It is used primarily for high current systems. Residential applications include those involving high-current photovoltaic (solar) cells.
